UM student wins gold for his design 'TongueMove'

Leong Ka Chon, a fourth-year student from the University of Macau's (UM) Department of Computer and Information Science, recently won a gold medal for his invention, 'TongueMove', at the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region Universities IT Project Competition 2015.

TongueMove allows physically disadvantaged people to use their tongues to control electronic devices, such as wheelchairs and computer keyboards. Equipped with a webcam, TongueMove captures the user' tongue movements before sending the photos to a cellphone or tablet for processing. After interpreting the meaning of the movements, the programme would give appropriate instructions to electronic devices that the user wishes to control. Leong's project was supervised by Prof Pun Chi Man.

'The competition broadened my horizons and gave me an opportunity to exchange ideas with students from different parts of China,' Leong said. 'This is my most rewarding experience in the competition.' Leong also thanked Prof Pun Chi Man for his teaching and patience: 'Without Prof Pun I would not have learned so much about computer vision and certainly would not have won a gold medal in the competition.'

Held in Macao, this year's final is the largest and the most competitive in the competition's history, attracting nearly 200 guests and 52 teams from 13 provinces, cities, and regions, namely Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao.

澳門大學科技學院梁嘉俊，以關懷弱勢社群的設計概念創作出“TongueMove＂，讓行動不便的人士以舌頭控制工具，最終在“2015泛珠三角大學生計算機作品賽總決賽”的眾多佳作中突圍而出，榮獲金獎。今屆總決賽共有五十二隊參賽，為歷屆比賽中規模最大、競爭最激烈。

梁嘉俊在指導老師潘治文副教授的指導下完成作品。“TongueMove＂顧名思義，是讓行動不便或殘障人士透過電子視像鏡頭掃描舌頭擺動，從而控制輪椅移動方向、鍵盤操作等等。該項技術只需一般手提或平板電腦配合攝影頭即可操作，透過電腦圖像處理技術分析舌頭運動情況，得知用戶表達的指令並控制身邊的電子裝置。該作品也可以協助手術後暫時不能活動的病人。

澳大科技學院電腦及資訊科學系四年級學生梁嘉俊表示，比賽最大的收穫是可與各地的學生進行交流學習，擴闊多方面的視野。他非常感謝潘治文教授一路以來的悉心教導和包容，使他可以專心研究，進一步加深在計算機視覺領域的理解，將理論與實踐結合，在比賽中獲獎，為澳大爭光。

該項區域賽事首次在澳門舉行，來自廣東、江西、福建、湖南、海南、貴州、雲南、四川、重慶市、廣西、台灣、香港及澳門等十三個泛珠省市及地區近兩百名參賽者及嘉賓共聚一堂，一展所長，相互交流切磋。
