Patrick Pang Cheong-Iao, a master's graduate of the Department of Computer and Information Science, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), was recently awarded a scholarship by the National Information and Communications Technology Australia (NICTA), to pursue a PhD degree at the University of Melbourne in the coming September.
NICTA is the largest information and communication technology research centre in Australia, with more than seven hundred researchers and five laboratories across the country. The scholarship is mainly granted to outstanding students participating in its research projects.
Mr. Pang studied Wikipedia during his master’s years under the guidance of Dr. Robert Biuk-Aghai. His research involved analysis of Wikipedia data, and focused on developing a set of algorithms for displaying its content in a graphical way, to help users to better understand the relationships, structure and topic distribution of Wikipedia content. The relevant results have been presented at several international conferences, and the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR has also supported Mr. Pang's participation at one of these conferences that was held in California, U.S.A. in 2011.
Mr. Pang expressed his gratitude to Dr. Biuk-Aghai for his guidance, as well as to UM for its support, saying the scholarship application would not have been successful without their support.
